What camera and lens do you use to achieve such tremendous results?

Yeah, I also would love to hear more about your camera.

I have taken my tripod into the woods when I feel like going on a photo hunt. It definitely makes for better pictures, but it can be a pain to lug around and set up. Your pictures look great though without one!

Great photos--you must have a real steady hand and good eye.

I live just west of Blacksburg (below Pearisburg)---maybe I have seen you at some of the Bird Club meetings? I go once in awhile. Joan

More great bird photos. Do they pose for you? :-) I've started attaching my camera to a tripod when I'm in certain situations. I tote the whole setup with legs collapsed in and sometimes up. It sort of works. It's not very convenient for the grab shots you see along the way. You can hot release the camera from it if need be, but I find when it's birds vs flowers, the shot is gone before you get it together.

Kerri, I don't think I would have the patience to use a tripod or have more equipment than my handy point and shoot! Your photos are outstanding enough. Wow!

These are great photos.
The camera is good but I think the photographer is better. If you don´t have what it takes ...

Wow, these are great shots....I cannot get good closeups. I need a better zoom. I admire you for these shots.

More excellent shots! I like them a lot.

I almost never shoot camcorders without a tripod as I can stand no jiggle whatsoever and image stabilization does not work well with telephoto shots on them, but I do shoot quite a bit of stills without the tripod.

Sometimes, it just takes too long to get the camera in action with the tripod, but that being said one has the greatest chance of getting extreme sharpness and detail by using a tripod.

I like the image stabilization lenses when shooting hand held. (I think Nikon calls theirs' VR for vibration reduction, but I may be wrong) I also like the freedom that one has when walking about with a lens like the 70-200mm without a tripod, in comparison to lugging the 500mm mounted and ready for action.

At any rate you got excellent shots without the tripod, and at the end of the day that is what that really matters.

These little creatures are lovely to behold. I know you had fun "capturing" them with your camera and I had fun seeing each one.

Your bird pictures are amazing. Birds never sit still a moment for me. The tripod is tricky to get used to.

You have so many interesting and pretty birds in your area - I can't get over the variety and the colors! I agree, the Tufted Timouse is very sweet.
