Pileated Woodpecker

It's not necessary to go far and wide. I mean, you can really find exciting and inspiring things within your hometown.
- Daryl Hannah

I am not sure what Daryl Hannah was referring to
in her quote - but I sure can find
a LOT of exciting things in my hometown...
I just have to step outside the door.

Female Red-bellied Woodpecker in the snow

Set wide the window. Let me drink the day.

To me....the BEST thing about snow - is trying to photograph the birds in it!

The Throb Of Amazement

Ten times a day something happens to me like this - some strengthening throb of amazement - some good sweet empathic ping and swell. This is the first, the wildest and the wisest thing I know: that the soul exists and is built entirely out of attentiveness.
 — Mary Oliver

At Home In the Forest

Red-bellied Woodpecker in the Forest along Deerfield Trail
Blacksburg, Virginia

You ask why I make my home in the mountain forest,
and I smile, and am silent,
and even my soul remains quiet:
it lives in the other world which no one owns.
The peach trees blossom, The water flows.
 ~ Li Po

Feasting at the Suet

A good memory is one that can remember the day's blessings and forget the day's troubles

One of my many blessings are the birds that visit my feeders. This is a Male Downy Woodpecker. He has such a vibrant spot of Red on his head!

Preparing for the Future

You had better live your best and act your best and think your best today; for today is the sure preparation for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow.
-Harriet Martineau

It was amazing to watch this female Red-bellied Woodpecker excavating a nest cavity. At some points she would be completely inside the hole with just a bit of her tail sticking out. She worked very hard at it!

Wednesday

Mama Downy Woodpecker

I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.
― Alan Wilson Watts

Tuesday

Another Red Head

Birds fascinate me! This little guy - a downy woodpecker - just pecked away at the suet and wasn't bothered by me at all.

After I downloaded the shot I saw that I got him with his tongue sticking out. How neat is that?
