I have tried for more than 10 years to get a decent shot of a Belted Kingfisher. This one isn't great - but it is the best I've ever gotten and I must say I am thrilled to have captured it. This was taken during our visit to Claytor Lake State Park for our 2019 Christmas Celebration.

Winter Tree 1 - at Claytor Lake State Park

"Have you ever noticed a tree standing naked against the sky, How beautiful it is? All its branches are outlined, and in its nakedness There is a poem, there is a song. Every leaf is gone and it is waiting for the spring. When the spring comes, it again fills the tree with The music of many leaves, Which in due season fall and are blown away. And this is the way of life."
- Krishnamurti

Saturday was a typical Autumn day - but in August --  cloudy, cool (I even wore a light jacket) and a bit drizzly. I saw no butterflies on my walks, but I did find some beautifully colored leaves that had already fallen. I am going to do a leaf series from all of the leaves I found today. So fittingly this one is called - August Leaf 1. I captured this at Bisset Park in Radford, Virginia.

Many more visits are in my future!

Flicker In the Forest - Northern Flicker

Male Northern Flicker - Claytor Lake State Park

“...the woods, when they give at all, give unstintedly, and hold nothing back from their true worshippers. We must go to them lovingly, humbly, patiently, watchfully, and we shall learn what poignant loveliness lurks in the wild places and silent intervales, lying under starshine and sunset, what cadences of unearthly music are harped on aged pine boughs or crooned in copses of fir, what delicate savours exhale from mosses and ferns in sunny corners or on damp brooklands, what dreams and myths and legends of an older time haunt them. Then the immortal heart of the woods will beat against ours and its subtle life will steal into our veins and make us its own forever, so that no matter where we go or how widely we wander we shall yet be drawn back to the forest to find our most enduring kinship.”
