Mandarin Duck

I couldn't have been more amazed to find this Mandarin Duck during a visit to Black Mountain North Carolina.  At first I thought it was a Wood Duck.  According to Wikipedia Black Mountain is one of the few places in the US with feral populations.

Woodpecker Head Twist


As I was watching this Red-bellied Woodpecker, he twisted his head trying to get at something (an insect or grub perhaps) beneath the tree bark.  This is the first time I had ever seen one turn his head around like this.

My one and only sighting
This was taken at Bisset Park in Radford, Virginia - a GREAT place for birds! I had not identified him at that time - but I do believe he is a Black and White Warbler.
