 This image captured on September 5, 2024 documents my first of year (2024) sighting of a Monarch Caterpillar - found along the Huckleberry Trail between Plantation Road and Hethwood. 

I was truly fortunate to have captured his shadow too!

Tiny Monarch Caterpillar - this is my first of the year sighting. - Deerfield Trail, Blacksburg, Virginia 

06-30-19 

 Each weekend I try to get out and inspect the milkweed that grows in and around the many greenways and trails in Blacksburg. I was rewarded with my first sighting of a tiny monarch caterpillar - who I hope grows up to become a beautiful monarch butterfly.

At first I thought of caterpillar "feet" and then I saw this diagram of a caterpillar's anatomy - HERE - and I see that they are legs. The lighting isn't all that great in this pic - but I thought it was cool how he was holding on upside down.
