Both of these are birds (of course), both are females and both are woodpeckers. The one of the left is a Downy Woodpecker and on the right is a Red-bellied Woodpecker -

-Harriet Martineau It was amazing to watch this female Red-bellied Woodpecker excavating a nest cavity. At some points she would be completely inside the hole with just a bit of her tail sticking out. She worked very hard at it!
